FAQs about applying to dental school

  1. My GPA isn’t strong enough, should I do a master’s program?

Personally, I did not do a master’s program however many of my classmates did a master’s program. This is a great way to strengthen your application for dental school because it shows them that you can handle a rigorous course load. Ultimately the decision is up to you. However, if you do have a poor GPA, find ways to balance it out with dental related extracurricular activities that will help you stand out.

2. Is dentistry worth it?

Is dentistry hard? YES. Is it worth it? YES!!!! The first two years of dental school sucked. 3 exams every week, countless hours in lab and hours of studying everyday. However, entering clinical years and treating your own patients shows how impactful dentistry can be. My final year of dental school has taught me so much and I feel like I have a career rather than just a job.

3. How expensive is it to attend dental school?

Dental school is expensiveeeeee!!!! However, there are military, navy and National Health Service Corps scholarships that will pay for dental school. It’s an expensive investment but so worth it.

4. What should I major in to attend dental school?

There are no specific majors for dental school. However, I majored in biological sciences and minored in public health. My classmates majored in everything from psychology to engineering to nursing to journalism; it all varies. All that matters is that you take the required prerequisite science courses.

5. Should I take a gap year before applying to dental school?

I took a gap year to work, travel, relax and get myself mentally ready to begin dental school. Ultimately it depends on where you are mentally and if you feel ready to go straight into dental school.

6. What did you use to study for the DAT?

Chad’s videos, DAT destroyer, Kaplan DAT book, Mental Dental videos on YouTube. I took the DAT in 2016 so there may be more resources than this.

7. How did you choose what school is best for you?

Visit the Impressions Day programs at the dental schools and open houses. This will help you see the school before applying and determine if you feel like the school is a good fit for you.

8. What are ways I can strengthen my application?

Shadow at a General dentist’s office, participate in dental summer programs, take pottery or crotchet classes, basically anything that can help build your hand dexterity, research, go to open houses at the dental school so that the school can be familiar with you, attend dental conferences such as ASDA and SNDA conferences. Any experience that builds your knowledge about dentistry will help strengthen your application.

9. Should I get a dental assisting certificate before applying to dental school?

The certificate is not required however it is a great way to not only strengthen your application but get a job at a dental office. Working as a dental office receptionist is another great way to strengthen your application.

10. Is it possible to have a social life while in dentistry?

YES! It’s all about balance. You will study a lot in dental school however it is so necessary to destress especially on the weekends. For the sake of your mental health, it’s important to keep the same hobbies you had before starting dental school so that you will not lose yourself in the process.
